FOREST HILL with SHOTOVER and SANDHILLS
Baptism: Natalie Ann Ockenden Kyte was welcomed into the Church when her family and friends brought her to be baptised on 31 October.
Frank Veness came to live in the village only a short while ago after the death of his wife. Some of us got to know him at church and had hoped to get to know him better, but sadly he has died. We extend our deep sympathy to all his family.
Poppy Appeal: In buying a poppy we remember the work and purpose of this appeal. Our organiser and collectors once again did a very good job and the total collected from the village was a record, £253. 95p.
Sandhills Community School: We congratulate everyone involved in the School Project:
the building and landscaping have received an Oxford Preservation Trust Environmental Award. The formal opening of the school by the Princess Royal was on 8th November and was a very exciting and successful day.
Village Hall: The Christmas Fayre was well attended, making £234 which will go towards Village Hall expenses. The Committee thanks all those who supported the afternoon and helped in any way. Next year perhaps more young people from the older age group could design a Christmas card. Many this year were very interesting and thoughtfully designed.
St. Nicholas Day, our Patronal Festival: We celebrate this special day at 10.00am on Sunday 5th December. The young people perform scenes about the life of St Nicholas. We all sing special St. Nicholas songs and put out a shoe to receive a golden coin. Everyone joins in, but we have a special practice for the children, which you will be told about.
Bells: The final part of the Project has been the refurbishment of our two bells dated 1652 and of the smaller Sanctus bell. Soon you will hear them ring again! The Vicar will re-dedicate them on St. Nicholas Day at our 10 o` clock service.
Carols at St Nicholas - 6.00pm Sunday 19th December:
We sing the familiar carols as the story unfolds in the readings, but wait for the Feast of the Epiphany for the arrival of the kings. The choir (specially volunteering for Christmas and Candlemas) ventures into other lands and traditions. Please volunteer (enthusiasm only qualification) and ring Mary-Rose, 872 514, for time of practices. New members needed to swell the joyful strain.
Carols at Sandhills - in School Community Hall
Monday 20 December at 7.00pm
followed by mulled wine and mince pies
(nb. there is no service in Sandhills on 12th December)
Everyone is always welcome at all our services and especially so at the Christmas Celebrations
This newsletter contains the time of all the services in the Four Parishes in December and January. Please keep it carefully.

‘GOOD KING WENCESLAS LOOKED OUT ...’
When did Good King Wenceslas look out ?
If you know your Christmas carols, you will know that the answer is ‘on the Feast of Stephen’ or, in other words, on Boxing Day.
I have never contemplated taking a service on Boxing Day until this year, when it falls on a Sunday. As a result, I have never really thought too much about St. Stephen, which is a shame because he occupies a very important place in the history of the Christian Church. St. Stephen was the first martyr: the first, of the first generation of Christians, to give his life for his faith.
For many people, the word ‘martyr’ has got some fairly negative connotations. It conjures up images of religious extremists, who have plenty of faith, but apparently little conception of the value of human life. This is unfortunate because what being a martyr really signifies is central to what it is to be a Christian. The word ‘martyr’ comes from a Greek word which means ‘to witness’. A true martyr is someone who witnesses to and reveals what they believe through their words and actions. St. Stephen witnessed to his faith in the Risen Christ both in the way that he lived and died. We read in chapter 7 of the Book of Acts that, even as he was being stoned, Stephen prayed that God would forgive his persecutors. These included a zealous young observer called Saul, who would later become St. Paul.
Christians may or may not be called to become martyrs like St. Stephen, but we are all called to be witnesses to our faith in Jesus Christ. This is especially important during this season, where the true meaning of Christmas can so easily get lost amongst all the many other distracting activities. It is up to us to keep Christ firmly at the centre of Christmas; to find ways of making our celebrations a true witness to the Good News of the birth of God’s Son, who came to bring hope and salvation to our troubled and broken world.
I wish you all a very happy Christmas and New Year. But between the two, spare a thought for St. Stephen, who reminds us that Christians are called to make their whole lives a living witness to the one who was born on Christmas Day.
Rev. Dr. William Brierley, Team Vicar

STANTON ST. JOHN
On 9th November, Peter Ady, who lived for many years in Stanton St. John, travelled to her funeral service in Beckley Church by horse-drawn hearse. The service was attended by many of Miss Ady’s friends and members of her family, to whom we send our sincere condolences.
Hilda Greenwood: Sadly Hilda died at the end of October, after a long illness so bravely borne. Her funeral service was held at St Andrew’s Church, Old Headington on Thursday 4th November in the presence of her family and friends. Our sympathy and prayers are with her husband at this time.
The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal 2004:
The collection in this parish amounted to £459.39 [which includes £86.47 donated at the Church Service on Remembrance Sunday]. Many thanks to those who gave so generously and to all of you who gave your time to display the collection boxes and to make the house-to-house collections: all very much appreciated. Brenda Knight
Village Christmas Celebration: Bah Humbug ! Tickets £5 / £3.50 concessions, includes mulled wine / soft drinks and mince pies. Profits will go to the Oxford Children’s Hospital and the Village Hall Fund. Tickets available from the village shop or by calling 351 803.
Social Events Past and Future:
In October we had an excellent Quiz evening run with his usual panache by John Lauder. Thirteen teams took part and it was a close contest with Mill Street providing the brains once again. Thanks to John (and Kathy, his scorer in-chief) and to Sheila for excellent refreshments.
At the end of the month, a skittles evening proved equally popular. Our enthusiast for the game, Reuben Malin, provided the transport to bring the skittle alley and for that we are very grateful. He didn’t figure among the leaders, however, and Dave Hughes came from behind with a final clean sweep of all 9 pins to win first prize. Again Sheila and her family are to be thanked for refreshments and setting out the hall.
In November we have had a Coffee Morning at Olive and George Lee’s home, which was well supported.
These 3 events have between them raised almost £400 for Church funds.
The future event is, of course, our very popular ‘Haggis Evening’ on Saturday 29th of January. Tickets (which are limited) are now available form Sheila (351 210) or George (351 486). Our entertainment will be provided this time by ‘Short Back and Sides’, a Barbers’ Shop Quartet including David Willcocks. Book Early!!
Women’s Institute: Our thanks to Betty Carter and Josie Johns for organising such a successful 82nd Birthday Party. We must also thank Mary Anthony for giving us an interesting and informative lecture. The December Meeting is on the second Tuesday, the 14th when Hugh Grainger will give a talk ‘Stagecoach – The Christmas Special’. The meeting on 18th January will be a talk and demonstration on Belly Dancing - the Oldest Dance by Lindsay Gasper.

HORTON-CUM-STUDLEY
St Barnabas Church:
A special service with Focus on Youth was well supported on 7th November. The oldest person present was over 80 and the youngest was 8. More than 10 young people, some parents and many of the regular congregation joined in traditional hymns, listened to a modern song by a Christian band, watched a PowerPoint presentation on ‘What’s been going on at Youth’, and heard a presentation on AIDS by one of the group, questions answered by a ‘distinguished panel’, and even some jokes! If you weren’t there, see what you missed.
There was a larger congregation than normal on Remembrance Sunday and small crosses were placed in the garden in memory of those who had died in war.
The Christmas Carol service will be on Sunday 19th December at 3.00pm. Christmas Eve communion will be at St Barnabas at 11.00pm, and Christmas Day Communion Service at 10.00 am at Beckley. The Christingle Family Service will be on Sunday 12th December, and the Crib Service will be on Friday 24th December at 4.00pm.
Youth will meet from 7.30 to 9pm at Kirsty and Warwick Teague’s (351 702) on 10th December for “Fair crack of the whip”. Contact them for details of arrangements in January. Anyone aged 10 to 15 is welcome.
Gardening Club:
There is no Gardening Club meeting in December, but on January 18th we have our AGM when the business meeting will deal with annual reports, election of the committee, and you can find out the contents of the programme for 2005.
Mulled wine and mince pies will then be served, and we shall enjoy some memories of recent years’ Club activities as we see some of Bob Wakelin’s collection of slides. It’s a good time to become a member. At a cost of £7 it’s excellent value. Details can be obtained from Annabel Hitchens (351 434) or Allan Tuckley (351 432).
Women’s Institute:
We are always delighted to welcome new members and if you would like to come to a 'taster' meeting before deciding to join us, please contact Annie Anderson (President) on 351 551, or Julie Ogden (Secretary) on 351 421. Meetings are on the second Tuesday of the month at 7.45pm in the Millennium Village Hall.
Our subs year starts in January and on the 11th we are looking forward to hearing about 'Q' of James Bond fame. Do come and try us!
Wanted for Recycling:
Old greetings cards (but not Christmas cards) are wanted for recycling to help Sobell House. So far thousands of pounds have been raised to aid their work and the latest benefit provided was a computer in the day centre. Your old cards may be left with Ann Stearns (351 334).
Waste & Recycling:
Green bins will be emptied on 6th December & 31st January. Brown and blue bins will be emptied on 13th December & 24th January. Householders will be advised of special holiday collections between 20th December & 21st January.

NOVEMBER 2004
What springs to mind when you hear the word ‘saint’ ?
For some people it will be a typical stained-glass image of a rather pious looking person in a long robe, with a halo around their head. For others it might bring to mind someone who they know who is, or was, particularly kind or good. There are the officially recognised Saints of the Church, such as St. Paul or St. Francis, and there are the more everyday, domestic saints of our own experience. Either way, we tend to think of saints as a race apart. Saints are seen as an elite of holy people, who we might respect, and even aspire to be like, but who we are unlikely to claim to be.
However, this understanding of what it is to be a saint was not shared by the writers of the New Testament. St. Paul addressed his letter to the church in Philippi to ‘all the saints in Christ Jesus at Philippi’, and his letter to the Romans to ‘all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints.’ When he did so, he was not suggesting that every member of those early churches was a perfect Christian. He was using the word ‘saint’ to talk about what God had done in the lives of these very ordinary groups of men and women, rather than about any particular qualities which the individual members of the churches might have possessed.
The problem with setting the saints up, as a special and distinct group of super-Christians, is that they quickly become an excuse rather than an inspiration. We can hardly be expected to display the level of commitment, love and self-sacrifice which we see in the lives of the saints because, after all, we are not saints. On the other hand, when we read St. Paul referring to every member of the Church as a saint, the word takes on a rather different meaning. It now speaks of what God makes us, rather than what we can become by our own efforts. If this is the case, then saintliness is no longer an excuse, but is rather an invitation to allow God to make us into something which we could not possibly become by our own efforts.
We are all called to become saints: a holy people of a gracious God of love.

Our Birthday Meeting will be on the 16th November. Don’t forget to let Betty or Josie have the photograph of yourself as a baby by 4th November; also remember to bring your wrapped present on the16th. It sounds as is we are in for an exciting evening!
Stanton St. John Parish Council: With the onset of winter and dark evenings ahead, could village residents please check their security lights, especially the low voltage halogen variety, so that they do not come on and stay on at inappropriate times.
It is important that lights are adjusted properly toward the ground so that they do not illuminate all the space around and cause light pollution.
A 500 watt, low voltage bulb is usually sufficient (as opposed to 1000w) in a rural conservation area with no street lighting. Traditional non-halogen lighting, placed sensitively and well-adjusted, might seem more appropriate than halogen lights.

BECKLEY
Beckley Church: Sunday School: A Sunday School, on the first Sunday of each month during the Family Communion Service, will begin on 7th November. The children will start in church at 9.30am, for the first part of the service, and then go to Beckley School Hall. They will then return to the church later in the service. The Sunday School is for children aged two and a half upwards, and there will also be a creche for younger children, so long as a parent stays with them.
The Family Communion Service will remain in its present form, having been designed for the whole church, and especially for families with children. The Sunday School will provide a choice for parents and children, as to whether the children wish to stay throughout the service, or whether they wish to attend Sunday School. Older children will be encouraged to stay in the service, which provides a good introduction to the life and traditions of the Church.
Offer of help with running the Sunday School would be very gratefully received. Appropriate Child Protection measures will be observed. For more details, or if you’d like to be involved, please ring Kate Lea on 358 522.
Baptism: On 10th October Charles Pauling was baptised and welcomed into the family of the Church. We send our prayers and very best wishes to Charles, his parents Nicola and Martin, his sister Olivia, and all his family and friends.
